Sustainable health-care system

The Swiss health-care system is a cause for concern: ensuring the personnel required in the health-care professions is becoming increasingly difficult, especially in basic health care. At the same time, the demands on services are growing as are the numbers of the chronically ill, elderly and frail. Costs are rising. How can we make the health-care system sustainable?

Modern medicine is very successful. However, it is also increasingly confronted with new demands: medicine should be oriented not only to the well-being of each patient, but also to scientific advances, the needs of a changing society and economic conditions.

Against this background, the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMS) launched the «Sustainable Health-Care System» project in 2011. This project is intended to raise awareness of the topic among the broader population and among doctors, indicate possible solutions and spark discussion at the same time. In this regard, the SAMS has produced numerous publications and developed other activities.
