Durch verschiedene Fonds und Programme fördert die SAMW, meist in Zusammenarbeit mit privaten Stiftungen, wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs und Forschung in bestimmten Bereichen. Wenn nicht durch ein Legat vorgegeben, sind es Forschungsfelder, die für die Entwicklungen der Medizin und des Gesundheitswesens in der Schweiz wichtig, aber noch wenig etabliert sind.

Im Jahr 2021 gab es keine Zusprachen aus dem Théodore-Ott-Fonds (ungenügende Erträge).
Swiss Personalized Health Network
Im Auftrag des Bundes leitet die SAMW, in Zusammenarbeit mit dem SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, die Umsetzung der Initiative «Swiss Personalized Health Network» (SPHN). SPHN trägt zur Entwicklung, Implementierung und Validierung einer koordinierten Dateninfrastruktur bei, um gesundheitsrelevante Daten schweizweit für die Forschung interoperabel und gemeinsam nutzbar zu machen.
2021 wurde eine Ausschreibung lanciert, um Schweizer Kohortenstudien den Zugang zum internationalen Maelstrom-Katalog zu ermöglichen. Eine zweite im Jahr 2021 veröffentlichte Ausschreibung fokussierte auf «National Data Streams (NDS)» und wird multidisziplinäre Konsortien unterstützen, die in die Entwicklung einer nachhaltigen Dateninfrastruktur investieren. Die Zusprachen für die NDS erfolgen erst im Frühjahr 2022 und erscheinen deshalb nicht im Jahresbericht 2021.
